Handcrafted furniture, made to last

Rob Cameron, Cabinetmaker

You won't find this furniture at Ikea.

Or Pottery Barn. Or Ethan Allen. That's because this furniture is created from start to finish by hand, by a single craftsman, working with tools that have been around for 200 years. This is cabinetmaking the way it used to be; when everyone owned furniture made by hand because that was the only way to make it.

Cameron Woodworks is one man building furniture one piece at a time for one customer at a time. You're not getting part #5345, you're getting a handcrafted piece of furniture that will last your lifetime and be passed down to your children. And their children.

Inspired by timeless styles like Arts and Crafts, Shaker and more, these pieces will to remain a treasured part of your collection and will be enjoyed for years to come. If you've never owned a piece of furniture built by hand, what are you waiting for?

Handplane

The pieces below are examples of what I can build for you.
Of course, everything can be customized—from wood choice and size to drawer count and even the number of dovetails.

Six Drawer Dresser

This six drawer side-by-side dresser was built with Sapele (a cousin of Mahogany) and 300 year old Douglas Fir. It features a unique drawer system known as NK (pronounced en-co) which provides for an extremely smooth sliding mechanism while minimizing wear. These drawers are built tight enough that each one slows itself on a cushion of air as it closes. The entire dresser includes 120 handcut dovetails

This piece, inspired by simple but beautiful Shaker designs, was built for me and my wife's first baby and doubles as a changing station. Matching nightstands and a bed are in progress and will provide an heirloom bedroom set. One drawer even contains a secret compartment, waiting to be discovered.

I never use stain to artificially color any of my pieces.
I only use penetrating oils which bring out the natural beauty and color of the wood.

Wall Cupboard 1

Hanging Wall Cupboard

Based on similar pieces from the early 20th century, this cupboard is meant to hang from a wall or sit atop a larger cabinet. Hanging cupboards were traditionally used to house flatware and dishes close at hand in the dining room. It is made from Walnut and Poplar. The hand-hammered rat-tail hinges are from a blacksmith in Pennsylvania.

This piece features a single drawer below, door above and a shelf inside. Removing the drawer reveals a small pocket for hiding valuables.

Don't see what you're looking for? Let's work together to build it.
I'll work with you, starting from initial sketches to the finished piece, to make sure you get exactly what you want.

Every piece has a story.
Watch as yours is written.

Building a piece of a furniture is a fun and sometimes surprising journey as raw wood comes in the door and leaves as a polished, complex object that someone will live with for the rest of their lives. I want to share that process with you.

In order to do this I created a service called Watch Me Make This which allows me to post photos, videos and comments about your piece live as it's being built. You'll have access to a website where you can view these images and post comments of your own.

And when you receive your piece you'll find a photobook of these snapshots of the building process. You may not be able to come to my shop in person, but this is the next best thing. I hope that by getting a peek at the process you will have a better appreciation for where your unique creation came from.

Clocks

This clock started with an Arts and Crafts design but added a modern twist: an LED display. Below this display are two analog timepieces. I'm unique in that while building these pieces with techniques that haven't changed much in 300 years, I love the opportunity to introduce a bit of modern technology when appropriate.

Of course, I can also build you a clock with a more traditional face.

Gameboards

The outside edge of this chessboard is a very unique piece of wood—it's called ancient Kauri and is over 50,000 years old. Kauri trees were found preserved in a bog in New Zealand. Today, several companies dig up these massive trees, cut them and make the wood available to the public. Curly Maple and Makore make up the white and black squares and the edges of the board are capped in Ebony.

A game board like this makes an eye-catching addition to a den or family room and, depending on the wood selection, may have an amazing story to tell.

Boxes

Boxes don't have to be boring. This particular box was made from a very beautiful piece of Mahogany. The edges are set with curly Walnut and brass hinges complete the piece.

Boxes make great gifts and can come in any size, shape or color. Don't be shy about requesting something unique!

Here are some pieces that are currently in progress.

Stereo TV Console

This is my most ambitious project to date. The idea for this piece came from the stereo TV consoles of the 60s and 70s. Back then, the TV was a piece of furniture itself, not just a black box that sat on top of something else. The design is heavily inspired by Greene and Greene—prominent architects and furniture designers at the end of the Arts and Crafts period.

This one-of-a-kind piece of furniture features a 40" LCD television, Blu-ray disc player, 5.1 channel Dolby Digital receiver, a turntable, and stereo speakers.

Custom Cabinetmaking

The pieces you've seen above are just a hint of the kind of furniture I can build for you. I don't have a set catalog of items that I recreate over and over again. Each piece can be unique and just for you. Of course, if you like the six drawer dresser just the way it is, I have no problem building it again!

Planing drawer runners

However, if you wanted eight drawers instead of six, or a darker wood, or a different profile on the top—just let me know. I'll work with you to make sure the design, and the price, is something that works for you. This furniture will last more than a lifetime so I want to make sure you get exactly the piece that you want.
